David Carkeet is the author of six novels, Double Negative, The Greatest Slump of All Time, I Been There Before, The Full Catastrophe, The Error of Our Ways, and From Away.  He has written two novels for young adults (ages 12 and up), The Silent Treatment and Quiver River.  His memoir, Campus Sexpot, won the Creative Nonfiction Award given by the Association of Writers and Writing Programs.  His short stories and essays have appeared in American Literature, Carolina Quarterly, College English, Kansas Quarterly, The Morning News, New York Stories, The New York Times Magazine, The North American Review, The Oxford American, Poets & Writers, River Styx, Saint Louis Magazine, Salon, The San Francisco Review of Books, Seven Days, Vermont Magazine, and The Village Voice.

David was born and raised in the Gold Rush town of Sonora, California.  He attended college at U.C. Berkeley and U.C. Davis, followed by graduate school at the University of Wisconsin and Indiana University.  For many years, he taught linguistics and writing at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.  He also directed the MFA program there and edited its literary journal, Natural Bridge.  Since 2003 he has lived in Vermont, where he plays the trumpet in several town bands and in Green Mountain Swing.  He and his wife, Barbara, have three grown daughters, Anne, Laurie, and Molly.
